It’s not that new of a disease. But, it has been misdiagnosed as cancer in many cases. It’s called Fibrodysplasia Ossificans Progressiva and it’s a pretty scary disease that few people have to deal with.
In layman’s terms, it turns people into bone. In a more complex way of putting it, tendons and ligaments start to grow into bone. People’s movements become more and more restricted because eventually the bone is growing inside of them. They are becoming captive of their own body.
Experts can obviously explain it better than that. But, the cases that have been found were misdiagnosed at first. The right steps weren’t taken because there really weren’t any right steps at the time. But, science is catching up to it. The gene that causes it has been identified. When that happens, the medical field can move more quickly at finding a cure.
Until then, patients are stuck fighting the unknown. One day they can walk and the next day, they find themselves bedridden. It can move that fast. But, there are signs that indicate if a person has it. If you see these signs, look into it. You may not have it. But, it’s better to be safe than sorry.
A Sign Of FOP
This foot has signs of FOP. The shorter big toes are an indication that a person should get checked. Mention it to the doctor. It might sound unbelievable, but your doctor might not be aware it exists.
A Rare Case
When the bones start protruding, the movement becomes more restricted. Some people go from walking to having to live the rest of their lives in wheelchairs. But, there is hope. Medicine is working on a cure while they already have a solution for slowing the process.
